Liverpool is “crying out” for Jeremie Frimpong to bring width to the team on a regular basis, claimed former Red Don Hutchison.

The Dutch international returned from a two-month injury on December 20 and has impressed in his four performances since. Frimpong registered an assist for Hugo Ekitike against Tottenham Hotspur in his first appearance after injury and then set up the opener in the 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers a week later.

The former Bayern Leverkusen star was also Liverpool’s most consistent attacking outlet during the New Year’s Day draw against Leeds United, although his repeated forays down the right flank did not result in a breakthrough moment.

He followed that up by providing an excellent assist in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.

After coming off the bench in the 76th minute, Frimpong’s excellent cross picked out Cody Gakpo at the back post, who bundled in what looked to be the winner in the fourth minute of injury-time.

The 25-year-old is proving to be an increasingly reliable outlet for the Reds, and the performances of Frimpong and Conor Bradley are helping to ease the transition from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit last summer.

“What a ball in from Jeremie Frimpong, that is a thing of beauty. Alexander-Arnold all over again,” Hutchison told Premier League Productions after the 2-2 draw against Fulham.

“Just get a bit of width, it’s what Liverpool have been crying out for. Whipped in towards the near post, it’s not easy to defend, and if you’re Gakpo, it doesn’t matter what it comes off – get it over the line.”

Injury has impeded Frimpong’s start to life at Liverpool, with two significant injuries limiting his impact. Arne Slot claimed ahead of the Fulham game that the summer arrival had essentially missed the entire season to date.

However, he is making up for lost time, and no-one has registered more league assists for Liverpool this season than Frimpong.

“You could say that I miss playing football, so of course I'm happy to be back on the pitch,” the ex-Manchester City youth star told Liverpool.com after the Leeds draw.

“Whether it’s right-back or right wing, I just use my ability, my speed,” said Liverpool’s No. 30. “It doesn't matter to me.

“I just try to bring my ability. If that brings something different [to the team] then it does. When I play, I just want to help my team.”
