Manchester United are in the market for a new manager following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.

Manchester United will struggle to appoint former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca as a replacement for Ruben Amorim, according to ex Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara.

Both clubs have parted ways with their bosses since the turn of the New Year, with Maresca leaving his post at Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day. Amorim’s sacking comes after a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road and another tense press conference.

A statement from Manchester United read: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”

Jamie O’Hara rules out Enzo Maresca to Manchester United move

That suggestion did not go down with ex Spurs man O’Hara, who put his head in his hands before a full-blooded response. He said: “What? Maresca? Interim? You’re living in cuckoo land. I know you’re ecstatic and want to get the champagne out now that Amorim has gone, but you ain’t getting Maresca in as an interim manager.

“Maresca’s credit in the bank has probably gone up since he’s been sacked at Chelsea. He’s not going to take an interim role at Manchester United. I understand if you want to bring him in on a four-year contract potentially, but the reason he left Chelsea and fell out with the board is exactly the same reason as Amorim has done. Maresca is going to look at Manchester United and go, ‘absolutely no chance am I going there, are you joking’.”

O’Hara went on to double down on his position, clarifying that he believed Manchester United would attract Maresca, but the similarities between the ex Chelsea man and Amorim’s ambitions would be a sticking point.

He said: “Come on, what are you on about? I can understand Maresca going to Manchester United, it’s one of the biggest jobs in the world. There’s a big but here.

“He’s just left Chelsea for the same reason as Amorim has ended up getting the sack at Manchester United. He fell out with the board and wants to be the manager, in charge of recruitment, scouting and players. He’s had the same problem at Chelsea, he’s not going to go to another club and want the same thing.”
