The New Orleans Pelicans entered a matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers with an 8-22 record two weeks ago. They had won five consecutive games coming in, finally looking like they were beginning to turn a corner.
Meanwhile, they have dropped seven games in a row since then, despite Jordan Poole and other key players returning to the floor. Even with that, there is some good news to celebrate.
In New Orleans’ last game against the Miami Heat last night, Trey Murphy entered action just three triples away from the franchise record. He got there, surpassing CJ McCollum for the most makes by a player in the history of the franchise.
Murphy has been a big-time scorer for the last three years. Games like this may make this team hesitant to trade him as they try and retool for the future.

It comes as no surprise that as of January 5, 2026, Trey Murphy is the three-point makes leader for the New Orleans Pelicans. Over the last few years, as his opportunities have grown, this is a guy that has been raining long balls from all over NBA gyms.
After the game, Murphy was asked about the achievement, and was grateful for the opportunity ti be able to do so in New Orleans. Of course, with the team’s 8-29 record and not having their own pick next season, he doesn’t appear overjoyed.
Hard to blame the forward amidst a trying year for a team that had hoped to build on a season in which they fell short of the Play-In Tournament. Getting players healthy has not been able to make much of a difference, as they have gone seven straight games now, without a victory.
It is very likely that the Pels will be doing some roster overhauls over the next month ahead of the February 5 trade deadline. By the time that comes, this is going to be a very different-looking team.
Questions have arose about Murphy’s future in NOLA. If it does end this season, it will have been a memorable run.
Next Steps for Murphy and the Pelicans
Most 8-29 teams can safely be considered trade deadline sellers. The Pelicans might be in a slightly different position, considering that they do not own their 2026 first-round pick. Dealt to Atlanta in the Derik Queen deal, it has proven to be far from ideal.
Ideally, bringing in new players could help to breathe new life into the team. Trey Murphy and Zion Williamson have more than done their part in recent games, but it has not been contagious. Jordan Poole has been very up-and-down since his return.
Derik Queen is missing some time due to injury, while fellow rookie Jeremiah Fears has been able to showcase why he will be a big part of the long-term plans. All things taken into consideration, this year can be seen as a failiure.
Anything goes when it comes to the NBA trade deadline. New Orleans expects to be an active team over these next few weeks, ready to bring some fresh faces in.
