Exclusive: Crystal Palace make Marc Guehi January sale decision after Man City talks

Crystal Palace have not completely discounted selling club captain Marc Guehi in the January transfer window, GMS understands.

Guehi is out of contract this summer and has no plans to sign a new deal at Selhurst Park. Palace were resigned to the defender leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season, and their preference remains to keep him for the remainder of the campaign, but the club accept that a big offer for an out-of-contract defender appreciated by Europe’s biggest clubs would be difficult to turn down.

Crystal Palace Need 'Extraordinary' Offer to Consider Selling Guehi

Palace believe keeping the England international gives them the best chance of achieving their season's aims of winning the UEFA Conference League and breaking their Premier League record points tally in consecutive seasons. However, they would consider offers if they could source a replacement.

Guehi came close to joining Liverpool on Deadline Day in the summer for a fee of £35million, but the deal fell through after Palace failed to secure a replacement. It is understood that Oliver Glasner asked Palace chairman Steve Parish to block the move, fearing his defence would be too weakened by a departure. Although the FA Cup-winning boss has publicly denied that he threatened to resign over the potential sale.

It would take an extraordinary offer for Palace to sanction a sale this month, with the Eagles expecting more than the £35million agreed in the summer – a premium reflecting the added cost of recruiting a mid-season replacement.

Man City Have Held Guehi Talks

Manchester City have held internal discussions over a move for Guehi this month after Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias picked up injuries during their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday. But sources have told GMS that Manchester City would only be interested in a deal if it were lower than the £35million agreed with Liverpool in the summer, reflecting the diminishing value of Guehi’s contract. Manchester City are yet to make a formal enquiry for Guehi.

Guehi is content to see out the season with Palace, believing the consistent game time and stability will give him a strong chance of being a starter for England at the 2026 World Cup. Palace boss Glasner has consistently praised the centre-back for his professionalism after his collapsed summer move and uncertain long-term future. While England head coach Tuchel considers Guehi a leader within the camp.

Guehi, who can sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside of England this month, can pick and choose his next club after the World Cup, knowing Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are among his suitors. GMS has learned that Barcelona also held a meeting with the Guehi camp, but are not planning to progress talks.
