John Terry says whether he thinks he is ‘qualified’ to replace Enzo Maresca at Chelsea

John Terry has responded to Chelsea fans doubting whether he is qualified to manage the club.

The former central defender has wanted to coach the Blues since retiring from professional football in 2018.

However, he has yet to manage a team at any level, and his dream of standing on the touchline at Stamford Bridge looks unlikely.

There was talk of Terry replacing Enzo Maresca on an interim basis this month before Chelsea decided to appoint Liam Rosenior.

The club legend accepts that he is not the man to take the Blues forward, but he feels disrespected by those suggesting he is “underqualified.”

Should Chelsea have appointed John Terry as interim manager?

John Terry corrects Chelsea fans about managerial credentials

John Terry has an impressive CV that most coaches would envy, including stints with Aston Villa and Chelsea’s academy.

He has also completed his UEFA Pro License, the mandatory qualification to manage teams in the Premier League and Champions League.

So, he did not appreciate when two Chelsea fans recently commented on Instagram that he was not qualified to replace Enzo Maresca.

Terry responded: “I have every qualification going, I have 3 years of coaching experience in the Premier League with Aston Villa. On top of that, nobody is more Chelsea than me.

“For us to be top again, we need a top manager, and yes, that would rule me out, but please don’t say I’m underqualified.”

However, one would argue that Terry’s issue was with semantics rather than the fans’ actual point.

While he is literally qualified to be Chelsea manager, he lacks the experience and achievements to warrant genuine consideration for the role.

John Terry would have made sense as Chelsea’s interim manager

Chelsea’s biggest issue after parting ways with Maresca was the lack of elite managers on the market.

There was nobody of Jose Mourinho’s or Carlo Ancelotti’s ilk available to replace Maresca at Stamford Bridge.

Instead, the West London club have turned to another inexperienced head coach: Strasbourg’s Liam Rosenior.

Therefore, it might have made more sense for Chelsea to hire John Terry as an interim manager until the end of the season.

This would have allowed the club the opportunity to wait for a proven winner to become available, or to give Terry the role if he had succeeded.
