Opinion: Ruben Amorim's sacking may have sealed one player's Chelsea fate

Just days after Enzo Maresca’s departure from Chelsea, Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Man United, and it could have some unwanted consequences.

It’s a manager bloodbath to start off 2026, with two of England’s biggest clubs undergoing significant personnel changes heading into the second half of the season.

Chelsea are set to announce Liam Rosenior as manager, and the man he is replacing may not be out of a job for long.

Maresca has been linked with Man United since leaving Chelsea, and now that Amorim is gone, he could be the next to take the reins at Old Trafford.

How would you feel about Enzo Maresca going to Man Utd? 🤔

Plenty of moving parts in terms of managers, but there could be a player whose future is determined by this saga as well.

Kobbie Mainoo less likely to join Chelsea after Ruben Amorim sacking

For months, the out-of-favour Kobbie Mainoo has been talked about for a switch to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea saw Mainoo as gettable in January, with his lack of playing time ahead of the World Cup a real problem.

Now, though, the manager who had cast him aside is gone, and his prospects have drastically improved overnight.

The Blues need to shore up their midfield. The quality they possess is undeniable, but one injury to a starter threatens to leave them concerningly short.

You never know. United’s next manager could also be indifferent to the 20-year-old. That feels unlikely.

Chelsea and Man United on a path together

Whether or not Maresca takes that job, Chelsea and United will be inextricably linked for rest of this season.

Two managers gone within a week, and two teams currently level on points in the Premier League.

You’d have to give the edge to Chelsea’s squad, but that will only serve to add pressure to whoever is coaching at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca leaves at the halfway point 👋

What should expectations now be for the end of the season?

Both Amorim and Maresca sealed their own fates with outspoken comments against their bosses.

The next two in charge would do well to avoid similar outbursts if they are to last the season.
