Charter Communications and Apple are teaming up to offer a handful of games from the Los Angeles Lakers to users of Apple’s virtual reality goggles Apple Vision Pro, the companies announced on Monday.
The first game will be offered live on January 9 to Spectrum TV and Spectrum Internet customers with access to Spectrum SportsNet, the companies said, and full game replays will be available in the U.S. and other countries to those with a free NBA ID.
A total of six games — including the January 9 match-up with the Milwaukee Bucks — will be presented through Spectrum Front Row in Apple Immersive, allowing Lakers fans to experience the games through Apple Vision Pro as if they’re in attendance.
Spectrum Front Row in Apple Immersive is produced specifically for Apple Vision Pro and delivers a high-bitrate feed of up to 150mbps. Viewers can choose from seven different camera perspectives, including positions at the scorer’s table, beneath each basket, a high-and-wide arena view, the player tunnel, the broadcast booth and a roaming courtside camera used for interviews and commentary. The telecast is led by Emmy Award-winning play-by-play commentator Mark Rogondino alongside analyst Danny Green, a three-time NBA champion and former Lakers forward.
The immersive presentation incorporates three-dimensional in-game graphics such as lower thirds, player rosters, clocks and scores that appear to float within the viewer’s field of vision. Spatial Audio captured by ambisonic microphones is used to recreate the sounds of the arena, from on-court action to crowd reactions. Coverage remains live during timeouts and halftime, allowing viewers to see pregame introductions, team huddles and in-arena entertainment.
Access to live games is tied to authentication requirements. Spectrum Internet customers and video subscribers in the Lakers’ territory who receive Spectrum SportsNet can watch live games, replays and highlights through the Spectrum SportsNet app. Apple Vision Pro users with a free NBA ID can also access live games and on-demand content through the NBA App. Outside the Lakers’ market, replays and highlights will be available beginning 24 hours after games conclude, with international access extending to markets including Japan, South Korea, Australia, France, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
