European football expert Andy Brassell was on TalkSport today, giving his take on the impending appointment of Liam Rosenior as Chelsea manager, from the perspective of someone who had followed the coach especially in his time in Ligue 1.
He said that fans shouldn’t be expecting a Jose Mourinho or a Carlo Ancelotti, as that’s just not how this team is run anymore.

“I don’t think we can compare current Chelsea to that [old Chelsea] because that’s not the way that things have been run under Todd Boehly and under Clearlake,” Brassell said.
“But if we’re talking about how Rosenior makes sense to this modern Chelsea, he’s a brilliant developer of players.
“And if it’s not just about the results, if it’s about collateral, if it’s about the money-ball side of it, if it’s about hoarding young players and making them into the best they can be, he’s possibly one of the better coaches that you could actually appoint, even forgetting about the BlueCo connection.”
That really points out the depressing reality of the club now – don’t expect them to appoint best manager to win games and trophies, expect them to appoint a complaint stooge who also can improve the value of assets on the books.
“Comparing him to previous Chelsea coaches and saying, this isn’t the equal of a Mourinho or a Conte, as we were saying before, that is not where Chelsea are at now,” Brassell concluded.
“And for where they’re at, it’s a really, really logical choice.”

Brassell also spoke about Rosenior’s ability to improve players, citing numerous examples from the last 12 months at Strasbourg.
Wayne Rooney was speaking about Rosenior on his podcast today, and claimed that a lack of experience playing or managing at the very highest level wouldn’t hold back his old colleague.
