Chelsea approach to Portuguese‘serial winner’manager revealed

Chelsea sounded out Abel Ferreira during their ongoing managerial review. However, the Portuguese coach is no longer on the club’s shortlist, and his name has dropped out of the process.

Information from Tupi FM explains that Chelsea assessed Ferreira internally after Enzo Maresca’s exit. At that point, the club defined the profile they wanted.

Leadership, experience in knockout competitions and emotional control under pressure topped the list. Abel Ferreira fitted those criteria, which explains why Chelsea initially looked at his situation.

In Brazil, the Portuguese manager is widely seen as a serial winner. Since arriving at Palmeiras in 2020, he has delivered 10 major trophies at domestic and continental level.

Those achievements still carry weight in Europe, even after a most recent season that ended without silverware.

Ferreira’s side also faced Chelsea twice in decisive international matches. Both games ended 2-1 to the Blues. Even so, Palmeiras showed tactical discipline, clear structure and strong game management. Observers in England reportedly took note of that approach.

Despite that interest, Chelsea chose not to progress. The Brazilian report makes clear that Ferreira is no longer under consideration. The club shifted focus as discussions evolved and as internal priorities changed.

Abel Ferreira remains fully committed to Palmeiras, as he has just signed an extension to his contract running until 2027.

Chelsea are now expected to appoint Liam Rosenior.
