Liverpool remain fourth in the Premier League after being held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday. While the Reds extended their unbeaten run to nine matches, the result felt like a missed opportunity.
Cody Gakpo’s 94th-minute goal was quickly cancelled out by a stunning 30-yard strike from Harrison Reed moments later as the Premier League champions failed to hold on for the maximum points, having also failed to beat Leeds United at Anfield.
Chelsea’s failure to beat Manchester City ensured Liverpool’s league position was not significantly harmed, but concerns remain. After spending £450million in the summer, clinging to a top-four spot is not what many envisaged.
Off the pitch, Marc Guehi continues to be linked with a move to Anfield. The Crystal Palace captain is out of contract this summer and has no intention of signing a new deal. Liverpool came close to signing the England international for £35 million on Deadline Day, but the move collapsed after Palace failed to line up a replacement.
“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year,” Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner said. “The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract.
“But he said, “no, I want to make something different. And that’s normal. And for us, it’s how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that’s all about how we are talking together.”
According to GiveMeSport, Palace have not ruled out selling Guehi in January, despite preferring to keep him until the end of the season. Any deal would require a fee higher than the £35million previously agreed, reflecting the cost of sourcing a mid-season replacement.
Manchester City have also held internal discussions over a potential move for Guehi following injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, though they would only consider an offer below £35million. No formal approach has yet been made.
