The January transfer window has opened, kicking off a month-long scramble as Premier League clubs look to make final adjustments for the remainder of the season. For teams chasing trophies, it’s a chance to strengthen their squads, while those fighting relegation can bring in reinforcements to secure survival.

But the window isn’t just about player movement. Clubs must also focus on stars nearing the end of their contracts – whether due to become free agents in 2026 or 2027 and decide whether to extend them before other teams try to lure them away.

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool. The England international is out of contract this summer, and while it had been widely expected he would leave Selhurst Park as a free agent, that scenario could now be in flux.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid have all reportedly expressed interest in signing Guehi on a free transfer. Current regulations allow him to sign a pre-agreement with an overseas club from this month.

Guehi came close to joining Liverpool last summer for a reported £35m, but Palace pulled out of the deal during the final hours of deadline day. The Reds remain keen, and it remains to be seen whether they will accelerate their plans to secure the defender this winter.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have also emerged as potential suitors. The Premier League leaders are considering a move for Guehi after injuries to defenders Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, and John Stones in Sunday’s draw against Chelsea. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, City are now in direct talks with the Palace captain.

Plettenberg posted on X: #MCFC are now in direct talks with the Crystal Palace captain. Although Guehi becomes a free agent this summer, a January move is now possible. FC Bayern and Liverpool are still interested, but City’s current situation could be decisive.”

Palace have not ruled out selling Guehi in January. Any deal would require a fee higher than the £35m previously agreed, reflecting the cost of sourcing a mid-season replacement.
