Liverpool stance on Federico Chiesa emerges

Federico Chiesa has struggled to make an impact at Liverpool since leaving Juventus in 2024. The Italian has found opportunities limited under Arne Slot, starting just two Premier League games since the beginning of last season.

Chiesa has occasionally been an impactful substitute this term but failed to impress when given a starting role against Wolves on December 27. Juventus are considering a loan move to bring Chiesa back until the end of the season and have made a formal approach for Chiesa.

The landscape at Juventus has changed since Chiesa’s departure in the summer of 2024. Giorgio Chiellini has replaced Cristiano Giuntoli as sporting director.

Luciano Spalletti is now in charge following a string of disappointing managerial appointments. Prior to leaving, Chiesa was sidelined by former manager Thiago Motta, leaving him little choice but to continue his career elsewhere.

However, it is unclear how receptive the Premier League champions would be, given the selection challenges Slot is currently facing. Mohamed Salah’s long-term future at the club remains uncertain.

Summer signing Alexander Isak is recovering from a broken leg. Chiesa’s versatility across the front line makes him a valuable asset, despite his lack of regular game time. A return to Italy could also appeal to Chiesa as he looks to regain form and visibility ahead of next summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America.

The forward has not played for Italy since last summer’s European Championship and previously rejected call-ups from manager Gennaro Gattuso during international breaks earlier this season.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Juventus have reached out to Chiesa’s representatives to explore a potential move. However, Liverpool appear unwilling to entertain the idea. The 28-year-old is said to be open to a move in January.

The Athletic’s James Pearce also reports that there has been no contact, formal or informal, from Juventus regarding Chiesa. The Italian forward remains an important member of Liverpool’s squad and has featured in the last five matches.
