Mets' owner Steve Cohen shot down the notion that the team's payroll will be lower in 2026 than it was in 2025

Despite not being in the same league, the New York Mets and Yankees are one of the fiercest cross-town rivals in all of sports, and there is never any love lost when the two MLB powerhouses square off in the Subway Series twice each year.

Mets’ owner Steve Cohen became a majority (95%) owner in the New York Mets back in 2020, and he has promised on several occasions that he will bring the team from Queens to the promised land, aka the Fall Classic. A recent statement from longtime Mets writer Tim Britton raises some question marks about where Steve Cohen’s loyalty truly lies.

Mets Writer Tim Britton Calls Out Steve Cohen

In a recent mailbag from The Athletic’s Tim Britton and Will Sammon, one question arose about who Steve Cohen really is a fan of.

Britton, a longtime Mets writer, points to this paragraph that he wrote about Cohen back in 2020, and it’s a very interesting sentiment that Mets fans should be aware of:

“Although Cohen has talked up his own personal Mets fandom, several people who have known him for a long time recall him more as a general sports fan or as a Yankees fan. Knicks games have been a more popular social occasion for Cohen than trips to the ballpark, and he even traveled to Indianapolis one year to watch the Knicks play the Pacers in a postseason series in the late 1990s. It’s Cohen’s wife, Alex, who registers more as the Mets diehard in the family.”

The issue that Mets fans have is the fact that they were sold on Cohen being a lifelong Mets fan, but that appears not to be the case, which is fine, but when the cross-town rival Yankees are brought up, it’s sure to make the Queens faithful uneasy. The Mets have lost Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Jeff McNeil this offseason, all of whom had been with New York before the 2020 season.

Mets Fans Just Want to Win, and That’s Understandable

The New York Mets have not won a World Series since 1986, and what fans want more than anything is to win. Many think that Steve Cohen’s rash and aggressive spending habits may increase the Mets’ chances of winning a World Series.

However, that has yet to happen, and despite dumping several million into the Mets, they’ve only been able to advance to the NLCS one time since Cohen became the majority owner of the team, and the Mets have missed the playoffs altogether on a couple of occasions.

There is still a lot of time remaining in this MLB offseason, but fans are sure to be upset at Cohen once again if no big splashes are made.

After a disastrous end to the 2025 season, Cohen promised he would make amends by improving the roster going into 2026. That’s yet to really happen, but if the Mets add a strong frontline starter and a pair of outfielders, the Mets will certainly look like National League contenders once again.
