World Cup winner singles out ‘amazing’ Liverpool star for being at fault for Fulham’s equaliser

Liverpool had all three points stolen from them in the 97th minute after a Harrison Reed wonder goal.

The Reds did not exactly put on the best of displays against Fulham but it looked like they had got the three points after a late Cody Gakpo goal, but that was not the case.

Reed scored a screamer with one of the last kicks of the game, with the midfielder likely never striking a ball sweeter than that.

However, despite how phenomenal the strike was, Liverpool could have defended it a lot better, and World Cup winner Frank Lebeouf has singled out one star for being at fault.

Frank Lebeouf questions Virgil van Dijk’s role in Fulham’s equaliser

Liverpool probably thought they had got themselves over the line and their energy had clearly faded, but the teams can never switch off in the Premier League.

Yet again, this is what the Reds did, and they failed to close Reed down, even if they had every player behind the ball.

Lebeouf wanted to shine most of the light on the captain Virgil van Dijk, though, even if he has been ‘amazing’ at points this season, with the Frenchman baffled by his role in the goal.

“I was with Olivier Dacourt the former Everton and Leeds player, and we said: ‘Why is Van Dijk not sprinting towards him?'” he said on ESPN.

“Why is he waiting because he has no-one to mark and is not doing anything. He is going a little bit forward and then puts his hand on the back and waits instead of sprinting.

“[He] is the one guilty for that. Yes, of course, maybe it wouldn’t have done anything to that shot but you have to try to disturb and put pressure on Reed. That is what Van Dijk didn’t do but what a crazy goal.”

Liverpool need to stop switching off as it costs them every time

This is not the first time Liverpool have switched off and conceded this season and, in fact, it was not even the first time they did this in the same game as Harry Wilson’s goal came in the same vein.

Liverpool were dominating possession but could not do anything with it, switched off, and before they knew it they were 1-0 down due to a simple through ball.

This keeps happening and Arne Slot cannot do anything about it as it is a player issue, with some like van Dijk needing to sort it out.

Liverpool’s fixtures are not the easiest either and with someone like Arsenal up next, they stand no chance if performances do not quickly improve.
