Enzo Maresca has become the latest manager to leave Chelsea under their current ownership.

It was confirmed on Thursday (1 January) Maresca has left Chelsea after his position was deemed untenable at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca is the fourth manager to part ways with the London giants since BlueCo – the ownership group spearheaded by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital – took over the club from Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

Chelsea have paid out around £36million in compensation to former managers Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino over the past three-and-a-half years.

Why Enzo Maresca could land significant Chelsea compensation

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Chelsea have been forced to pay managers compensation on several occasions over the past decade.

Maresca only lasted a year-and-a-half at Stamford Bridge, having joined from Leicester City in June 2024.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Maresca’s likely compensation, Borson said: “Look, in this day and age, very few people decide to walk out the door of any job without a compensation payment.

“I think in this scenario, what he’s effectively saying is that he’s entitled to compensation because effectively they want him out.

“I think the reality is that the non-exceptional exceptionals in Chelsea’s accounts, i.e. the removing of managers over many years and almost every year, I think is back.

“There’s probably only been about two years out of the last 10 where they paid no exceptional termination payment to a manager.”

Why Chelsea could get Maresca compensation ‘discount’

Borson revealed Chelsea will likely pay Maresca between £5-10m in compensation.

“Clearly, it’s a lot of money,” said Borson.

“I would think you’re talking about somewhere in the region of £5-10m. One year’s salary at least. That’s the kind of payment that Chelsea have chosen here.

“Maybe in this scenario he was a bit more amenable to leaving and, therefore, they’ve got a discount as part of that negotiation to remove him.

“But you look at it as a bit of a weird situation. You’ve got one minute he’s heir apparent at City and the next minute he’s unemployed. That’s the weird world of football I guess.”

Liam Rosenior has emerged as the favourite for the Chelsea job, with the 41-year-old already working under BlueCo’s multi-club model at Strasbourg.
