Liverpool remain "attentive" to the signing of £35m "absolute gem" - Fabrizio Romano

**Liverpool are still “attentive” to completing the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.**

It is common knowledge that Guehi was one of the Reds’ main transfer targets last summer, with the 25-year-old so nearly sealing a move to Anfield.

He had agreed a £35m transfer and passed a medical, but at the eleventh hour, Palace decided that they couldn’t allow him to leave, due to the lack of a replacement.

Now, Romano has provided an update on Guehi’s situation on [_X_](https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2008269136678326779?s=20), talking up a move to Manchester City but also saying Liverpool remain an option for him:

_“Manchester City want to sign Marc Guehi in January as talks started, initial approach made. He’s on the shortlist, as @SamiMokbel\_BBC reported. Liverpool, attentive to the situation and in talks since August. FC Bayern remain in active talks to sign Guehi as free agent.”_

Guhi was clearly happy to join Liverpool back in the summer, but there will be concern from some supporters that the Reds’ poor season may have seen his opinion change.

City are clearly a big lure, given the wages they will pay and the fact that they are always in the mix for the big trophies, so they are a big threat.

Liverpool will hope that Guehi still sees them as his No.1 choice, whether that be this month or more likely in the summer, and he would be a fantastic signing, being hailed by [Michael Beale](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11096/13159981/marc-guehi-the-rise-of-englands-absolute-gem-euro-2024-defender) in the past:

_“He shows a huge amount of confidence to play on the left side and his technical upbringing from Chelsea means he can use his left foot, albeit he is dominant on his right foot. When you see the teams line up, he’s not the biggest centre-back but he has a huge leap. Quietly people are realising we have an absolute gem in him.”_

Guehi has a big decision to make about his future, but from Liverpool’s perspective, they simply must sign a couple of centre-backs in 2026, with the depth in that area sorely lacking, especially with Giovanni Leoni out injured.
