Chelsea reveal reasons for Rosenior hire as contract length confirmed

Confirmed: Liam Rosenior has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Chelsea

Chelsea Football Newsletter

Chelsea have explained why they appointed Liam Rosenior as their new head coach to replace Enzo Maresca.

The Blues officially announced on Tuesday morning that Rosenior had been named as Maresca’s long-term successor after he held positive face-to-face talks with the club on Monday, having flown to London from France over the weekend.

Rosenior has signed a six-and-a-half year contract at Stamford Bridge that will run until the summer of 2032.

The 42-year-old had spent 18 months in charge of Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg, who are owned by the same BlueCo investment group, guiding them to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 last season after succeeding Patrick Vieira in the role.

Rosenior leaves Strasbourg - where he signed a new three-year contract in April - again sitting seventh after 17 games and Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Nice, as well as top of the Conference League table with an unbeaten record in Europe this term.

The former Reading, Fulham, Hull and Brighton defender previously spent 18 month in charge at Championship side Hull before being sacked in May 2024 after failing to reach the play-offs and also had a short-lived spell as interim boss at Derby in 2022.

Why Oxford Street is so much more than a shopping destination

Explaining their decision to hire Rosenior after parting company with Maresca after 18 months on New Year’s Day, Chelsea said in a statement: “Liam has shown that he can build teams with a clear way of playing while setting the highest standards with players on and off the pitch.

“While there will continue to be a focus on player development, the Club’s expectations and ambitions remain high.

“Liam has the ability to get the best out of this squad quickly and joins us with the responsibility and the backing to ensure Chelsea continues to compete at the top level in all competitions this season and in seasons to come. Welcome to Chelsea, Liam!”
