Chelsea will continue to look for players until a new boss is appointed but might need to move quickly to land a top target.
Chelsea’s transfer planning shouldn’t be affected by a change of manager with work already well underway behind the scenes.
Several players have been linked already with Sandro Tonali mentioned as a possible target in a signing that would provide balance in midfield and allow Enzo Fernandez to do more of what he did against Man City when he was given permission to play on the front foot.
Chelsea might need to move quickly for Marc Guehi
The first thing that Chelsea will deal with is the appointment of a new manager with Liam Rosenior the clear favourite to replace Enzo Maresca. The former Hull City boss has performed well at Strasbourg and at BlueCo’s other club with a report by Caught Offside suggesting that he has already asked for Marc Guehi to be his first signing. If The Blues do want the Crystal Palace skipper, they will have to move quickly, after an update provided by BBC Sport.
According to Sami Mokbel: “Manchester City are emerging as contenders to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi this month. BBC Sport understands City are exploring a move for the England centre-back in the wake of defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias suffering injuries in the draw against Chelsea on Sunday.
“England centre-back John Stones is also currently out injured. City will wait to discover the full extent of the Gvardiol and Ruben Dias injuries before making a final decision on whether to proceed with their interest in Guehi during the current transfer window. But sources have told BBC Sport that City's interest in Guehi has progressed and that a move in January should not be discounted.”
With Gvardiol suffering a broken leg, his season is over and City will be looking for cover and for someone to replace Stones long-term as his contract ticks down.
Why Guehi made the right choice leaving Chelsea
Guehi would provide stability and consistency in Chelsea’s defence and he would also come with the added benefit of knowing the club inside and out having spent his formative years at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to Sky Sports not long after leaving Chelsea, Guehi was clearly disappointed about having to leave, but it has been a decision that now sees him with his pick of clubs across the continent including super powers like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid: “It hurt a lot just because I was there for such a long time. It's such a different feeling leaving there and not going back to where you've been for so long. But in order to grow, sometimes you have to take the hard choice and take the hard path sometimes.”
That hard path could lead him back to Chelsea and be the first pawn in Rosenior’s revolution, if City don’t get there first, that is.
