Fulham 2-2 Liverpool: Match Review
Liverpool are keeping their options open for new centre-back signings this month
Liverpool are up against stiff competition when it comes to important transfer targets this month. The Reds are eagerly looking to improve their squad, despite spending a record-breaking amount of money over the summer.
The reigning Premier League champions dropped an eye-watering £446 million on new signings last year but it hasn’t helped them compete to defend their title. British record transfer Alexander Isak is out injured, Giovanni Leoni is also side-lined with an ACL injury, while Milos Kerkez continues to attract negative feedback.
Due to an overall disappointing period so far, Liverpool are now forced to consider new signings at this halfway point in the season. Their defence in particular has highlighted itself as a problem area, especially as both Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez could leave the club this year.
Arsenal and Man United pushing Liverpool for high profile transfer target
Marc Guehi remains a top target for Liverpool but despite coming close to signing him over the summer, it does not guarantee they will be successful this time round.
To keep their options open, the Reds have targeted alternatives to the Crystal Palace captain. According to TEAMtalk, Rennes star Jeremy Jacquet is one of the names on their radar but naturally, they aren’t alone with their interest.
The report claims that at least four other clubs are prominent in the race for the 20-year-old’s signature. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United ‘are all keen’ on signing Jacquet, while Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation.
Chelsea in particular have their eye on the French defender following former manager Enzo Maresca’s raised concerns over their defensive depth. As a result, the Blues have ‘carried out extensive checks’ on Jacquet, who is under contract with Rennes until 2029.
With Liverpool, Arsenal, United and Madrid all ‘tracking’ the centre-back, the competition for his signature has been descried as ‘intense’.
What is the latest on Liverpool’s interest in Marc Guehi?
Liverpool were set to round off their summer transfer window with the signing of Guehi. A fee had been agreed and personal terms were met, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug in the twilight hours of Deadline Day.
Not only did that leave Liverpool without their top centre-back target, it’s now allowed others to enter the picture and try to turn his head.
Manchester City have now emerged as contenders to sign Guehi this month, according to BBC Sport. As Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias have suffered injuries, the Premier League title challengers are looking to flesh out their backline. The report claims that City's interest in Guehi has ‘progressed and that a move in January should not be discounted’.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have also been linked with the soon-to-be free agent. Guehi is expected to leave Palace this year but it remains to be seen whether the Eagles will sign off on an exit halfway through the season for one of their most important players.
