Wolves parted company with the 42-year-old last season and he is still yet to join a new club

Wolves’ fellow Premier League side Chelsea have appointed Liam Rosenior as their new head coach. He has left Strasbourg to take on a new challenge at Stamford Bridge. The 41-year-old has managed in England before with Derby County and Hull City.

Rob Edwards’ side welcome the London club to Molineux on Saturday 7th February. In the meantime, they have a few fixtures to get through as they aim to build on their 3-0 win over West Ham last time out. They face an away trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Wednesday night to face Everton as they head to Merseyside in search of a second win in a row.

Former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil linked with new job

Former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has emerged as a candidate to replace Rosenior at Strasbourg. According to The Athletic, he is in ‘talks’ over a switch to France. The Ligue 1 outfit are sat in 7th place in the table and also compete in the Europa Conference League as they weigh up who to bring in next as their manager.

O’Neil, 42, spent his playing days as a midfielder and made 542 appearances in all competitions, scoring 38 goals. He had spells with the likes of Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham, QPR, Norwich City and Bristol City. The London-born man hung up his boots in 2019 after a final stint at Bolton Wanderers.

The ex-England youth international subsequently delved into the coaching world. He started out in the academy set-up at Liverpool before linking up with AFC Bournemouth as part of their backroom staff. O’Neil later landed the Cherries’ job on a permanent basis after Scott Parker’s dismissal.

He did a decent job during his time in Dorset and kept them in the Premier League with ease before he was harshly sacked and replaced by Andoni Iraola. Wolves handed him a route back into the dugout and he lasted 16 months in the Midlands. He won 32% of his 63 matches at the helm before he was given the chop.

How have Wolves fared since Gary O’Neil’s exit?

Wolves dismissed O’Neil in December 2024 after a poor run of form. Vitor Pereira then came in and steadied the ship. The Portuguese boss managed to keep them up with relative ease in the last campaign.

However, this term has been a disaster for the club and Pereira was sacked earlier this winter. Edwards has since come in to replace him and their victory over West Ham last time out was his first since he left Middlesbrough to join them. He has also managed the likes of Forest Green Rovers, Watford and Luton Town in the past.

Wolves are rock bottom of the table and look set to return to the Championship unless a miracle happens. They need to add some more quality to their squad now the January transfer window is open for business. Edwards has the opportunity to bring in his own type of players over the coming weeks before the deadline on Monday 2nd February.
