Chelsea appoints Liam Rosenior as new head coach

Chelsea have [confirmed](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/liam-rosenior-appointed-chelsea-head-coach) the appointment of Liam Rosenior as their new head coach on a six-and-a-half-year deal that runs until June 2032.

The 41-year-old [replaces Enzo Maresca](https://thesportstoday.com/2026/01/01/enzo-maresca-leaves-chelsea-after-18-months-in-charge/), who departed Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day after 18 months in charge.

He arrives from RC Strasbourg, Chelsea’s partner club owned by the BlueCo group, after holding talks over the role on Monday.

Following his appointment, he said, “I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of Chelsea Football Club.

“This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies. My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies.

“To be entrusted with this role means the world to me, and I want to thank all involved for the opportunity and faith in undertaking this job. I will give everything to bring the success this club deserves.”

Rosenior started his coaching career as Brighton’s Under-23s’ assistant coach before moving to Derby County to become a member of Philip Cocu’s backroom staff.

He stepped up to the role of assistant manager following Wayne Rooney’s appointment at the start of 2021, and the following year spent time as the Rams’ interim manager, winning seven and drawing two of his 12 games in charge in League One.

Rosenior left Pride Park upon Paul Warne’s arrival as manager in September 2022. It wasn’t long before Hull City acquired the services of their former defender, appointing Rosenior as their new head coach.

Positioned one point above the relegation zone, Rosenior steered them to safety and then, in his only full season on Humberside, guided Hull to seventh place in the Championship.

When Liam Rosenior took over at Strasbourg in the summer of 2024, the club had ended the previous campaign 13th out of 20 teams in Ligue 1, having finished 15th the season before.

In Rosenior’s first season in charge, the Englishman guided Strasbourg to a seventh-place finish and European football for the first time in 19 years.

He achieved that with a squad with the lowest average age across the top five leagues in Europe.

Rosenior leaves Strasbourg seventh in the French top flight midway through the season, while they topped the Europa Conference League standings with an impressive five wins and one draw from their six matches.

He will be joined at Stamford Bridge by two of his assistants, Kalifa Cissé and Justin Walker, and Strasbourg’s head of analysis, Ben Warner.

Rosenior will not be in the dugout for Wednesday’s Premier League short trip to Fulham, with Under-21 coach Calum McFarlane remaining in interim charge, but he will take charge of Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie at Championship side Charlton Athletic.
