Hawks, Trae Young working on possible trade, reports say

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlanta Hawks star and last season’s league assists leader Trae Young and his agents are working with the team on a possible trade, according to reports.

ESPN’s Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania reported on Monday that sources said the point guard’s representatives and Hawks General Manager Onsi Saleh have started talking over the past week on finding a resolution.

According to Charania, the team and Young’s agents have spoken out about his future over the past several months after the Hawks decided not to offer a contract extension. He has $95 million left on his contract for this season and next season, with a player option in the offseason.

Young, 27, has been the franchise’s centerpiece since being drafted in 2018, as he is the team’s all-time leader in three-pointers made and assists. He led the Hawks to the playoffs three times during his eight-year stint, including an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals in 2021.

However, Charania says the team is looking to begin a “new era” with the rise of forward Jalen Johnson, who’s averaging 23.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.4 assists a game, and free agent signing Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who’s averaging a career-high in points at 20.5.

This season, Young has only played 10 games due to leg injuries. During the 27 games he has missed, ESPN Research indicates that the Hawks are 15-12 compared to 2-8 with him, while holding opponents to nearly 10 fewer points per game.

Young is currently out with a right quad injury, having missed the last six games. He dealt with a right MCL sprain earlier in the season.
