“Number One For Me”–Paul Scholes Backs Man Utd To Appoint Former Chelsea Boss (And It’s Not Maresca)

Paul Scholes has named England manager Thomas Tuchel as his “number one” choice to become the next permanent Man Utd head coach.

The Red Devils are expected to appoint an interim until the end of the season, with Michael Carrick in the frame, but Scholes thinks Tuchel could be available after the World Cup to take the job for the long term:

“Number one for me, which I’d do in the summer, is Thomas Tuchel all day long. I think Tuchel is one of the very best out there. His contract with England is only until the summer.”

“He could be quite difficult to handle, but he’s done it at big clubs, and he’s turned England around as well of late.”

Tuchel does have plenty of experience

As Scholes points out, the German has had success at several big teams, including Chelsea, where he won the Champions League.

Tuchel is, however, a demanding personality, and there are concerns that he may fall foul if he doesn’t get along with the likes of Director of Football Jason Wilcox and Head of Recruitment Christopher Vivell.

Who are the favourites to be the next permanent Man Utd head coach?

Plenty of names are being thrown about. Another former Chelsea boss, Enzo Maresca, has been mentioned as a candidate, while Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi, former Barca manager Xavi and even Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler have been linked with the job.

There are conflicting reports over whether Tuchel’s predecessor as England coach, Gareth Southgate, is under consideration. Some suggest that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still a big fan of the 55-year-old and would like him on the shortlist, while others have dismissed his candidacy. There is likely to be plenty more discussion about who will be Ruben Amorim’s long-term replacement over the coming weeks.
