“Exceptional” player praised by coach – but he refuses to promise him more minutes

Calum McFarlane has just taken his second press conference as Chelsea boss, and he had some interesting questions to answer this time around.

The subject of Andrey Santos was high on everyone’s list. The Brazilian midfielder did really well after coming on for the second half of the Man City game and helping his team get back into the game.

McFarlane was asked about his decision to use the Brazilian, who was not an Enzo Maresca favourite since arriving back from his loan at Strasbourg in the summer.

“It was impacted by Moises [Caicedo] being suspended. Everyone knows how well he has played this season – so he will help us tomorrow. Andrey came on and was exceptional. I’m hoping with Moises back we can control the midfield.”

The question is – with Caicedo back from suspension tomorrow, will Santos get another go? Does he deserve more playing time in general?

“I don’t think it’s my place to say how much he should be playing. He was exceptional on Sunday. There’s not many places tougher to play than at the Etihad. The more he performs like that, I’m sure the more opportunities he will get. He’s been a pleasure to work with.”

Whatever happens with Santos, let’s just hope we get these same sorts of interesting and detailed answers from Liam Rosenior once he’s taken over. It’s a refreshing break from the monosyllabic Maresca.

The interim coach also spoke about 3 key players who missed the Man City game, but apparently all trained today.

McFarlane also spoke about Wesley Fofana, who was ill and left out of the squad to face Man City. His prospects for tomorrow sound touch and go at this point.
