Liverpool have been named in a sensational transfer link with Lionel Messi
Ahead of the 2026 MLS season starting in February, clubs are considering a temporary deal for a player regarded as one of the best to ever grace the game. Messi is now 38 years of age but it hasn’t stopped clubs from showing interest in bringing him in.
Barcelona-based outlet Sport reported that ‘several clubs’ are trying to sign the Argentinian before the new season in the USA starts. Liverpool are said to be ‘one of the most powerful teams that seem to be pursuing a move’.
Liverpool linked with Lionel Messi
A further update has been provided on Messi’s potential move to Europe. According to information relayed by Fichajes, a ‘specific and clearly defined loan’ move is what is being discussed. Liverpool are ‘considering taking advantage of this competitive gap’ to bring Messi to the Premier League and European competitions.
Despite now being in the latter years of his career, those close to Messi ‘insist’ he still has sporting ambitions and ‘wants to compete at the highest level’ as long as his fitness levels will allow it.
A move to Europe, and the Premier League in particular, would certainly provide this, especially as he has never played in England.
Liverpool ‘aware’ of what Lionel Messi transfer would mean
If Liverpool were able to pull off a sensational move for Messi, they are ‘aware’ of the ‘immediate global impact’ it would have on the club. For the short amount of time the Argentinian would be in England, the Premier League would be the main focus of world football.
Signing him on a short-term deal also minimises any risks. The club see it is as a ‘unique opportunity’ to raise their level of competitiveness, while also broadening their international image. Having Messi merchandise available to buy in the club shop will be an invaluable asset from a business point of view, while his worldwide recognised talent will only boost team performance and morale.
As things stand, there is no confirmed talks between Messi and any other club. However, even just initial reports regarding a potential move is gathering worldwide interest and speculation will no doubt rise rapidly.
Messi has achieved so much during his career, including the long-awaited World Cup title in 2022. He has ten La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies with Barcelona and has won the Ballon d’Or eight times.
Back in 2012, he became Barca’s highest goal-scorer of all time, and earned high praise from Spanish and Argentinian media, including the label of a ‘living legend’. While he approaches the end of his career, it’s only natural clubs around the world will be scrambling at the idea of signing one of the best players in the world before it’s too late.
