Jonjo Shelvey says he played with a striker at Liverpool who was a 'joke'

Liverpool did not have the greatest team when Jonjo Shelvey was playing for them but they still had a few superstars.

The Reds have built something of a super team over the summer, with there being an elite level player in almost every position on the pitch.

This has not always been the case, though, and back in 2010 when Shelvey joined, the team looked very, very different.

There really were not many players who were much better than the level Liverpool were at back then, but there were still a few who should have been playing at a much higher level.

In fact, there was one striker who Shelvey still loves to this day, with the Englishman saying that he was so good that it was a ‘joke’.

Jonjo Shelvey still can’t believe how good Luis Suarez was

One of, if not the best, Liverpool player of that era was Luis Suarez, with the Uruguayan also one of the best the club has ever had.

He could score all types of goals, and lots of them too, with defenders not even getting close to being able to stop him.

He did not have the best of players around him, but he still made himself into one of the greats, and Shelvey is still shocked to this day as to how good he was.

“I loved Suarez. I think he’s a top, top centre-forward. He was so good, unbelievable player,” he said on the Under The Cosh Podcast.

“The first day [at training], Carragher has gone in to press him and he’s just megged him and put it in the top bins.

“Normally, these South Americans take a while to adjust to the Premier League, but he was straight into it, nailing people in training.”

“He’s in Miami but he can’t move now. It’s a bit sad when you watch him, really, but he was a joke. That year when he scored three or four hat-tricks in a season, he was a joke. He was a top, top player.”

Shelvey left Liverpool about a year before Suarez in 2013 and he is still playing 13 years later, with the Englishman currently in the UAE second division.

He joined Swansea after leaving Anfield before going to Newcastle where he spent seven years, with this the place where he properly made a name for himself.

Since leaving them in 2023, he has played for Nottingham Forest, Caykur Rizespor, Eyupspor, Burnley and now for Arabian Falcons at the age of 33.

He has had a successful career but perhaps not as glamorous as it could have been, unlike Suarez who has gone on to be one of the best to ever do it.
