Harrison Reed scored a 97th-minute equaliser to cancel out Cody Gakpo’s 94th-minute strike as Fulham and Liverpool drew 2-2 at Craven Cottage over the weekend.
Florian Wirtz had initially levelled for Liverpool after Harry Wilson’s opener, before Gakpo appeared to secure the win in stoppage time. Reed’s stunning 30-yard strike ensured the points were shared.
Wirtz later revealed after the game that he initially chose not to celebrate because he thought he was offside. The Germany international said: “I was sure it was offside, so I didn’t even celebrate. I was happy that I scored, but I’d rather take the three points.
“We need points and we wanted three points today. We know there’s no easy game in this league. The intensity we brought on the pitch in the second half was much better. We didn’t press them well in the first half, but the second half was much better.”
The draw extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to nine games in the Premier League this campaign, while Fulham remain unbeaten in five.
Fulham manager Marco Silva has revealed that the club have contacted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) regarding Wirtz’s controversial 57th-minute goal.
The strike was initially flagged for offside, but the goal was allowed to stand after a VAR check, bringing Liverpool level at 1-1. Silva described it as “a clear offside” and has requested clarification.
“The club is trying to get in contact [with PGMOL] – until now we didn’t have any feedback,” Silva said. We are still waiting for some feedback from the Premier League, from PGMOL, because it is very important for us.
“We didn’t have the one to make us understand why and not have the same opinion. Not just me… me, my staff, our football club, all the other players, fans. I think if you go to ask all Premier League [teams, each club] is going to have the same opinion. All the people that love football will have the same opinion as myself.”
