Virgil van Dijk claims Liverpool have two players who can become the best in the world

Liverpool completed a major squad overhaul following their Premier League title success.

After clinching just their second league crown in the 21st century, the Reds spent over £400m on new players this past summer.

However, not all of their recent additions hit the ground running at Anfield.

Hugo Ekitike continues to impress and was a big miss during the recent 2-2 draw with Fulham.

Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz was criticised a great deal following his big-money move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz began to improve in late 2025, shining in a new role in Arne Slot’s frontline.

Liverpool fans have begun to turn on the German since then, but Virgil van Dijk still thinks that the 22-year-old has a bright future ahead of him.

Van Dijk recently spoke to FIFAPRO’s social media team and praised Wirtz and another player when doing so.

The Dutchman was asked which young Liverpool player will be next to make it into the FIFAPRO World 11.

He responded by naming Wirtz and another Liverpool midfielder: “Probably Florian Wirtz and Ryan Gravenberch. Obviously, he’s [Gravenberch] not the youngest anymore, but I still think they can get into it.”

While Wirtz and Gravenberch did not make the cut in 2025, Van Dijk did.

However, despite a dominant 2024/25 from Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian actually missed out on the eleven.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (Paris Saint-Germain / Manchester City, Italy)

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool, Netherlands)

Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain, Morocco)

Nuno Mendes (Paris Saint-Germain, Portugal)

Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid, England)

Cole Palmer (Chelsea, England)

Pedri (Barcelona, Spain)

Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain, Portugal)

Ousmane Dembele (Paris Saint-Germain, France)

Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid, France)

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona, Spain)

But based on how the current season has gone so far, it seems unlikely Salah, or any other Reds star for that matter, will be in the 2026 team.
