Liverpool have missed out on one of their January transfer targets with Manchester City closing in on a deal

Liverpool have yet to make any significant moves in the transfer market as Arne Slot prepares his side to take on Premier League leaders Arsenal on Thursday night.

The Reds spent around £450m in the summer but things have not gone to plan at Anfield with Slot’s side all-but out of the title race as they sit 14 points off the Gunners before the sides meet in North London.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of players this month as they look to bolster the centre of their defence and attacking options. Among the club’s forwards, Mohamed Salah’s future is uncertain while Federico Chiesa is of interest to Juventus. The Serie A club are said to have made contact about a move.

One player the Reds were interested in was Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo. He has been one of the stand-out players in the Premier League this season and BBC Sport have reported that a deal has been agreed between Manchester City as they will meet the player’s £65m release clause.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham were all interested in the player alongside City but Pep Guardiola’s side are the only ones to have made a firm move to sign him. His release clause expires at the end of this week but City have got the deal done in time, beating their rivals to the punch.

Providing an update on the move, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said that a medical had been booked with it due to take place after the Cherries face Spurs in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

“I told you, no worries, no problems, Antoine Semenyo will play for Manchester City. The here we go is coming soon the player is going to work under Pep Guardiola.

“His final game at Bournemouth will be on Wednesday, then he's going to become a new City player, so all set on that one.”

On his X account, Romano confirmed that Semenyo picked City over the likes of Liverpool as he was keen to work under Guardiola.

Semenyo offers pace, directness along with goals and physicality. The Liverpool forward line has lacked a bit of physicality this season and with Alexander Isak out with a broken leg and Salah at the African Cup of Nations, immediate reinforcements would be welcome.

The Reds are unbeaten in their last nine games but have struggled to produce the performance they had on display last season as they strolled to the title in Slot’s first campaign at the club.
