Manager responds to claims his club wants to sign 'exceptional' player from Liverpool

Liverpool fans have had little to get excited about in the transfer window so far, and losing a fan-favourite would only add to the misery.

Marc Guehi could join Manchester City this month, with Oliver Glasner now confirming that the Crystal Palace centre-back could move.

Elsewhere, the Sky Blues are signing Antoine Semenyo ahead of Liverpool in what is thought to be a £65m deal.

As well as potentially losing out on two big-name targets to a Premier League rival, there have been question marks around the future of a fan-favourite at Anfield.

Juventus manager on signing Federico Chiesa

Fans want Arne Slot to use Federico Chiesa a lot more than he currently is.

The Italian, who has previously been called ‘exceptional’, has been handed just one Premier League start this term before swiftly losing his place on the right wing to an out-of-position Jeremie Frimpong.

Amid a lack of minutes, there have been claims that his former club, Juventus, have been in contact for Chiesa this month.

However, Juve boss Luciano Spalletti has now been asked about signing the Liverpool star and denied any contact, as per Gianluca Di Marzio.

He said: “I’m happy you’re giving me the news, especially since we haven’t had any real transfer market meetings yet.

“As far as I know, the discussion is just being thrown around, but there’s nothing concrete .”

Why Federico Chiesa could start against Arsenal

Though the winger has seen little game time this term, there may be a chance he features against Arsenal.

Hugo Ekitike missed the 2-2 draw with Fulham at the weekend due to an injury, while Alexander Isak is a long-term absentee.

Cody Gakpo started up front against Marco Silva’s side, but with Florian Wirtz dealing with an ongoing hamstring issue, Gakpo may be needed on the left against the Gunners.

As a result, Chiesa could be used as a striker, with Slot previously confirming that is a role the ex-Juventus man can fill.

Speaking in late December prior to Ekitike’s injury, the manager said: “He [Ekitike] is ready to go into the programme we are facing now, but he is not the only number nine I have [with Isak injured]. Federico Chiesa can play in that position as well.”
