Gary O’Neil agrees to join Strasbourg as Rosenior heads to Chelsea

National World Top Stories Update Tuesday 6 January, 2026

Strasbourg have reached an agreement in principle with Gary O’Neil to replace Liam Rosenior.

O’Neil, 42, has been out of work since leaving Wolves last season and had attracted interest from several English clubs. Strasbourg, who finished seventh in Ligue 1, have moved quickly to offer him the chance to return to management in France.

The basic terms of the deal are understood to be in place, although the appointment still needs to be finalised. Talks took place over the weekend and O’Neil is close to taking his next job.

Strasbourg began their search for a new head coach after Rosenior emerged as Chelsea’s first choice. Both clubs are owned by BlueCo, which smoothed the process of his departure.

The club has regularly turned to managers with Premier League experience in recent years. Patrick Vieira previously held the role, while Rosenior was appointed in July 2024 and guided Strasbourg into the UEFA Conference League.

O’Neil began his coaching career at Liverpool before being named caretaker manager at Bournemouth in August 2022 following Scott Parker’s dismissal.

He was confirmed as the permanent head coach three months later and led the club to a 15th-place finish in the 2022-23 season.

Despite keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League, he was sacked in June 2023. He later joined Wolves, finishing 14th, but was dismissed last season. The club ultimately stayed up under Vitor Pereira.

O’Neil had been linked with a return to Molineux earlier this season before withdrawing from contention.
