Luis Enrique Liverpool twist emerges

The football rumour mill went into overdrive this week when social media exploded with claims linking treble-winning manager Luis Enrique to a shock departure from Paris Saint-Germain—with Liverpool potentially lurking in the background.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday evening suggesting the Spanish coach had refused a lucrative contract extension at PSG and was seeking a “new challenge” in the summer, with German outlet BILD cited as the source. It certainly made for strange reading with how successful the Spaniard has been at PSG.

For Reds supporters desperate for a spark, the prospect of landing a Champions League-winning manager who has delivered an unprecedented nine trophies in just over two seasons at PSG seemed almost too good to be true. And indeed, it was.

It was later confirmed that no such article ever appeared in BILD, despite the widespread attribution across social media platforms. Enrique’s contract runs until 2027, and PSG have even been linked with offering him an unprecedented lifetime deal to secure his long-term future.

Furthermore, PSG sporting director Luis Campos dismissed the reports as “100% fake news” when contacted by Canal+ reporter Olivier Tallaron. So while the reports have now been confirmed as fake news, there is a chance that Enrique ends up managing in the Premier League in the future – perhaps at Anfield.

Speaking in a 2013 interview with FourFourTwo, the Spanish boss claimed he could manage in the Premier League in his career: “I’d like to manage in England at some point. My wife wouldn’t like the weather, she’s from Barcelona and likes the sun. It would depend on the team and the football they played.”

While this week’s speculation proved baseless, it highlights two undeniable truths: Liverpool’s current trajectory under Slot remains under scrutiny, and should Enrique ever decide to test himself in English football, the interest from Premier League giants would be genuine. For now, though, the European champion remains firmly committed to his PSG project.
