Arne Slot’s response to claims Liverpool are dull & boring: “I’d use different words”

Arne Slot has been accused of overseeing dull and boring football with Liverpool this season, with no clear style or identity, and he was asked pointedly about it by a reporter.

In years gone by, there was one thing you could guarantee about Liverpool. That they were never boring and had a clear identity, even if things were going somewhat awry.

However, the 2025/26 season has brought laborious, slow football with little to no intensity – both on and off the ball – and Slot has, as a result, been labelled as dull and boring.

Ahead of the trip to Arsenal, Slot was point-blank asked: A lot of fans are saying in recent weeks that the football has been dull and boring, what do you make of that?

Arne Slot addresses ‘dull and boring’ claims

Slot responded by saying, “I find it really hard to hear, but it’s not that I completely disagree.

“I would use different words, and I would take certain things into account, but I want to win as many trophies as I can, but I think I’m also known for the fact that my team’s always tried to play attacking football, and I can only say that we are still trying to do so.

“But having a lot of ball possession, I’ve said this many times, that does mean you play attacking football, because you try to win the ball back as soon as you can, and when you have it, you try to create something.

“But we are struggling to create a lot of chances. But I’ve said many times, we’re not the only team that struggles to create a lot of chances.

“I don’t think the amount of chances we create are so different to some other teams in the league that are doing really well.

“But I don’t like to hear this, of course, because if there’s one thing I would like, it is us winning a lot of games, but also us playing an attractive style of football, which I think we’ve also done this season.

“And we have to find a way against teams that try to make it not an attractive game, which is, of course, maybe even smart for them to do, we have to find answers to that.

“That’s something we haven’t found enough yet, but we are working on that every single day to improve that.”

At the halfway stage of the Premier League season, Liverpool had scored their fewest goals (30) since Jurgen Klopp arrived in 2015/16, which was a 17 goal reduction from last season.

After a historic investment in the summer, the last thing supporters expected to tag Liverpool as was boring, but there has yet to be a clear sign that they are turning a corner.

And Arsenal will now prove a stern test of that, a fixture that could see Liverpool without Hugo Ekitike after Slot’s update on his hamstring injury.

The Big Debate

Is this the most boring and dull you remember Liverpool?

Arne Slot has insisted his philosophy has not changed this season, but Liverpool lack identity and intensity, setting up not lose rather than to win. What would you change?
