Liverpool cannot unilaterally recall Harvey Elliott from his Aston Villa nightmare.

That’s according to Arne Slot who has shut down discussions about the 22-year-old’s future as time seemingly ticks down on his stay at Villa Park.

Asked about the attacking midfielder, who is on loan from Liverpool to Villa in a deal that could see Villa obliged to buy the former Fulham youngster permanently, Slot was clear in his stance.

"If you want to ask about a [Aston] Villa player, ask Unai Emery. Liverpool has no recall option."

Elliott has played only five games since arriving on transfer deadline day in September and Emery has not included him for several months and stated he does not want to trigger the obligation which kicks in after ten appearances.

The Spaniard said last week: "The problem we have with Harvey is that this year he is on loan, and in case he plays matches we must buy him.

"We decided two months ago that we are not convinced to sign him, spending the money we would need to sign him.

"This is the only issue. He is training every day, always every day with very good behaviour and to help us in training sessions.

"This is not something good for him and good for us, but this is football and sometimes we must take some decisions which are not good for everyone."

Elliott has been linked with a move to MLS outfit Charlotte but it has been claimed he is not keen on the idea. As things stand he remains stuck in limbo.
