Paul Merson bemoans 'bad decision' made by Arne Slot in his Arsenal vs Liverpool score prediction

Liverpool and Arsenal will clash in a Premier League meeting on Thursday evening.

The Reds’ record against the Gunners throughout history is actually pretty good, with no side having beaten the North Londoners on more occasions.

However, the 2025/26 season has been a poor one for Liverpool, with fans continuing to call for Arne Slot to be replaced in the dugout.

They go into the Arsenal tie on a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, but that has included four draws from seven league matches.

Chris Sutton thinks Liverpool are out of the title race already, and Paul Merson shares a similarly negative view of the club.

He also bemoaned a decision made by Slot in the 2-2 draw with Fulham this past Sunday.

Merson said: “Should Arsenal win at the Emirates, Liverpool are completely out of the title race! Something is just not right at Liverpool and I can’t see them getting a result here.

“I don’t understand why Arne Slot decided to take Cody Gakpo off after he scored against Fulham. If Gakpo was on the pitch, he picks up Harrison Reed before that incredible late goal. It was such a bad decision from the Liverpool manager.”

The former Middlesbrough player went on to predict the Gunners will secure a 3-1 win at the Emirates on January 8.
