David Ornstein Makes Concerning Prediction About Chelsea’s January Transfer Plans

Chelsea are not expected to be busy during the January transfer window, according to The Athletic ‘s David Ornstein.

The trusted journalist was asked by NBC Sports whether the Blues would be active this month, and he replied succinctly:

“I think it’s going to be a quiet January at Chelsea.”

It appears any hopes that the club could reinforce the first-team with a striker or a centre-back over the coming weeks have been extinguished.

Chelsea are expected to focus on outgoings

While no major signings are expected, several fringe players could be set to leave Stamford Bridge over the coming weeks.

Raheem Sterling has been frozen out since returning from his loan spell at Arsenal last summer. He is keen on a permanent exit this month, with Fulham currently the favourites to secure his signature.

Axel Disasi is another player who is expected to be on his way if a suitor can be found. Due to the Blues having maxed out on loans abroad, he can only leave England on a permanent basis. He could, though, still be loaned out to another Premier League outfit.

Tyrqiue George’s future is uncertain as well. He saw a move to Fulham collapse on Deadline Day back in September, and while he is not pushing to leave, there is a feeling that offers will be considered if it means he can get more game time.

The Sporting Leadership team may sign more youth prospects

While any recruits for the senior setup have seemingly been ruled out by Ornstein, agreeing future deals for youngsters is still a possibility.

The club are scouting Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, but he is probably a target for the summer transfer window rather than January.

There is also interest in Saint-Etienne’s Djylian N’Guessan, but even if he were to be brought in, it is expected that he would be loaned out to Strasbourg at the end of the season (much like what happened with another Saint-Etienne youngster, Mathis Amougou).
