The January transfer window has barely opened and already the rumour mill is churning out stories that feel all too familiar for one Liverpool man.
Chiesa’s struggles at Liverpool have become one of the most puzzling narratives of Arne Slot’s tenure. Despite costing a bargain £12 million from Juventus in August 2024, the Euro 2020 winner has started just two Premier League matches across his entire Liverpool career—with only one of those coming this season. His total minutes in the Premier League this term paint an even bleaker picture: a paltry 227 minutes across 15 appearances, with 13 of those being substitute cameos.
The pattern is depressingly familiar. Last season, Chiesa managed just six appearances totalling 171 minutes as injury and fitness concerns plagued his debut campaign.
Chiesa remains on the periphery—even with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Alexander Isak sidelined long-term. His lone Premier League start against Wolves in December ended with him being hooked after 61 minutes, and he’s since returned to his familiar role as an unused substitute.
A report stemming from Fabrizio Romano on Monday claimed that former club Juventus have made formal contact with Liverpool over a potential January reunion with Federico Chiesa. Just 18 months after pushing the Italian winger out of Turin, the Serie A giants are now exploring the possibility of bringing him back to the Allianz Stadium.
Now Tuttosport are reporting that Liverpool wants at least 12 million euros to ensure they cover the fee they paid for Chiesa in 2024. Liverpool are said to be holding firm in negotiations, with Juventus reportedly favouring a six‑month loan that includes an option to buy, while the Reds want firm guarantees over a permanent sale to recoup the €12m they paid in 2024.
Prior reports from Italy have suggested that Liverpool are ready to let Chiesa leave, but only after Mohamed Salah returns from AFCON, with Arne Slot wary of leaving his squad short in attacking options.
