Liverpool’s long-running pursuit of Marc Guehi has taken yet another dramatic twist, with fresh comments from transfer insider Fabrizio Romano casting doubt over the Reds’ chances of landing the Crystal Palace captain this month.

The 25-year-old England international has been firmly on Anfield’s radar since the summer, when Liverpool came agonizingly close to securing his signature on transfer deadline day in September. Since the deal collapsed, Manchester City have now emerged as a genuine threat as they seek reinforcements for the injured defensive duo of Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.

The landscape shifted again this week when Glasner made a U-turn on his stance. Speaking ahead of Palace’s clash with Aston Villa, the Austrian manager admitted the club would now consider offers in January if the price is right:

“I’m not so naïve as to think that if a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will not happen,” Glasner told reporters. “There will be a point where the club has to say, ‘OK, the financial aspect is more important than the sporting aspect.’ If the player says, ‘I want to leave,’ and the offer is above the threshold, it will happen.”

And it looks like that scenario could happen. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has dropped the news that City are now actively negotiating with Crystal Palace for Guehi – a worrying turn of events for the Anfield club.

However, he adds that “never say never” regarding a potential Liverpool swoop this month:

“The doors are not closed for a January exit for Marc Guehi. Man City are on it, they are negotiating with Crystal Palace, but it’s not something done or agreed,” the Italian transfer guru said.

“Don’t forget about Bayern calls, don’t forget about Liverpool calls, the situation is moving around Guehi because both clubs are tracking the opportunity for the summer transfer window.”

“Liverpool internally believe the deal will be difficult to do in January, but never say never because Liverpool had the player in their hands last summer – then we know the deal collapsed.”

“Man City want to do the deal now and are prepared to pay a transfer fee to Palace, so let’s see what happens with this situation.”

For Liverpool, the news represents a worrying development in what has already been a frustrating saga. The Reds remain light at center-back and missing out on Guehi again, this time potentially to a direct rival, would be a bitter pill to swallow.
