Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg ‘real threat’ to bolt for Celtics in four years, says Bill Simmons

Not much has gone right for the Dallas Mavericks so far on the 2025-26 season, but one thing that fans have been able to hang their hats on is the play of rookie number one overall draft pick Cooper Flagg, who has gotten off to a strong start to his NBA career. While fans are still waiting for Flagg's three-point shot to come along at the NBA level, all of the other intriguing aspects of his skillset are already starting to manifest in a big way for the Mavericks.

Mavericks fans would be forgiven for already bracing for Flagg's exit from the franchise considering the way that Luka Doncic was ripped away from them around this time last year, and recently, Bill Simmons of The Ringer spoke on a potential team that Flagg might have eyes on if he ever were to leave Dallas.

“I’d also worry about if I were them about Cooper Flagg coming to the Celtics in four years. I think that’s a real threat. like tank, but don't tank too hard. His whole family's in Maine and their house is covered with Celtics stuff and his mom is probably the biggest female Celtics fan in New England. So I'd worry about them. Just a whiff,” said Simmons on his podcast.

Indeed, Flagg has made no secret of the fact that he was a Celtics fan growing up, and has also seemed to cultivate a friendship with Boston star Jayson Tatum, following in his footsteps by going to Duke.

However, at this point, Flagg has made no indication that his loyalty lies anywhere other than the Mavericks, who selected him number one overall this past summer and are reportedly contemplating a trade of Anthony Davis that would fully hand over the reins to Flagg as the face of the franchise.

In any case, the Mavericks will next take the floor on Thursday night against the Utah Jazz.
