Liverpool target Marc Guehi is being eyed by Premier League rivals Manchester City along with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich

Liverpool are facing further competition to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi with Premier League rivals Manchester City emerging as contenders for his signature.

Reports earlier this week indicated that City were considering a move for the England international after suffering some fresh injury concerns.

Now in a fresh update, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has shed further light on the situation and reports that City will try to make a move happen this month.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich are looking at signing Guehi as a free agent this summer as he does not plan to pen fresh terms with Palace and will see his contract expire at the end of the season.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "So City want to sign a centre-back in January, City want to do something to help Pep Guardiola, Mark Guehi is a target, but don't forget that there are Liverpool and Bayern involved in the race over a potential free deal for the summer transfer window.

"So let's see if Liverpool could consider to anticipate the deal in January or not, to try. There is still no official bid to Palace, but for sure Liverpool are still in conversation with the agents, and same for Bayern.

"Man City will try to make it happen now, let's see if it's going to be possible with the player and with Steve Parish, the chairman of Crystal Palace."

Liverpool had a deal agreed with Palace for Guehi on deadline day in the summer transfer window. However, despite agreeing to pay £35m and with a medical planned, the deal collapsed as the Eagles did not feel they had enough time to find a suitable replacement.

At the time, the push to keep Guehi was spearheaded by manager Oliver Glasner.

Speaking in late August after Guehi scored in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa, Glasner said: "I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season. "We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.

"We wanted a replacement by 1 July. It is 31 August and we have no replacement. We have this agreement so it is clear from me. He is such a crucial player. He is one of our key players - he is our captain."

"I'm not naive," said Glasner. "If a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen."
