According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Mavericks received disabled player exceptions for Dereck Lively II and Dante Exum.

The disabled player exception (DPE) allows a team to sign a replacement player for 50% of the injured player’s salary or for the amount of the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, whichever is lesser.

For example, if a team receives a DPE for a player earning $10 million, the exception would be worth $5 million. If the injured player earns $30 million, the DPE would be capped at the mid-level exception ($12,822,000 for 2024/25).

This season, Lively is on his rookie contract making $5.2 million, while Exum earns $2.3 million.

Earlier, Shams Charania reported that Lively will undergo a season-ending procedure on his right foot to address lingering discomfort. The 21-year-old center is expected to make a full recovery.

Lively’s first three NBA seasons have been hampered by injuries, limiting him to just 98 regular-season games. This season, he appeared in seven games for the Mavericks, averaging 4.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in roughly 16 minutes per contest.

Exum, 30, will also undergo season-ending knee surgery after dealing with complications from a right knee procedure in the offseason. A follow-up surgery has been deemed necessary.

Despite injury struggles last season, including a broken hand that limited him to 20 games, Exum demonstrated his value on the floor. He averaged 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, shooting efficiently at 47.8% from the field and 43.4% from three-point range.
