The BNZ Breakers, in partnership with Basketball New Zealand, have announced the launch of their Elite Development Camp, a high-performance programme designed to identify and develop New Zealand’s most promising young basketball talent – and provide a clear pathway to the NBL, elite international basketball, and the NBA.
"We know that New Zealand can grow world-class basketball talent, and we want to find that next generation," says BNZ Breakers President of Basketball Operations Dillon Boucher.
The camp, to be held from 11-17 January 2026, brings together selected athletes from across Aotearoa to experience what life as a professional basketball player looks like within the Breakers system.
Delivered in collaboration with Basketball New Zealand, the Elite Development Camp will be led by a high-performance coaching group including:
1. Matt Lacey – BNZ Breakers Assistant Coach & NZ U19 Men's National Team.
2. Josiaha Maama – NZ Junior Tall Blacks Coach
3. Greg Brockbank – NZ Under 17 Assistant Coach
Athletes selected for the camp have been identified through a national scouting process involving BNZ Breakers and New Zealand junior national team staff. The programme will evaluate players for potential future opportunities within the Academy, Development Player programme, and national team pathways.
Participants will experience:
1. A week in the life of a BNZ Breakers Development Player.
2. Coaching aligned to BNZ Breakers and Tall Blacks styles of play.
3. High-performance training, education, and competition.
4. Exposure to the professional standards required to progress to the NBL, international basketball, and the NBA.
The Camp will be held at the BNZ Breakers Training Facility and Dilworth Senior Campus, immersing athletes in an elite training environment designed to challenge, educate, and inspire.
The Elite Development Camp forms a key pillar of the BNZ Breakers’ “Back in Black” philosophy – a renewed focus on investing in New Zealand players and rebuilding the development pathway that underpinned the clubs’ four NBL Championships and decades of national team success.
“We are investing in the future by building the pathway from the junior system into the world of high-level professional basketball.” Said Boucher.
