Liverpool have the chance to make another Diaz-type signing, and they have to pull the trigger - opinion

Luis Diaz turned out to be one of Liverpool’s best pieces of business in recent years.

The transfer market has been open for just over a week now and the Reds are yet to pull off any noteworthy deals, or even be heavily linked to anyone for that matter.

It seems like they might be happy to just keep the squad they have and hope for the best, something that really could backfire come the end of the season, and perhaps even lose Arne Slot his job.

Why won’t Liverpool follow Man United’s lead and SACK Arne Slot?

They have made many January signings in the past, though, showing there is still a chance they go big, and it looks like they might have another Diaz situation on their hands, so they will have to act fast if they want one of their targets.

Liverpool must push plans for March Guehi forward, just like they did with Luis Diaz

Liverpool signed Diaz in January 2022 for just £37m, with this coming towards the end of the window despite the club liking to do their business early.

This was because he was actually not supposed to be a target until the summer that year, but due to interest from Tottenham, they pushed forward their plans.

They did the same with Cody Gakpo too the next January transfer window to fend off interest from Manchester United, so they could do the same this year with Marc Guehi.

Guehi almost joined the Reds in the summer and they want to sign him this coming summer too on a free, but they might not get the chance anymore.

With that said, pushing their plans forward is beneficial to stop Man City getting him but also because they really need a centre-back now anyway, meaning it would be a win-win.

Liverpool would have signed Marc Guehi by now

Although there is evidence of doing deals late in the window, Liverpool do like their business done early, and with Guehi wanted by so many clubs, they would have pulled the trigger by now if they really wanted him.

They had a £35m deal for him agreed in the summer, with the Reds unwilling to go any higher than this now even though Palace might demand a little more.

Liverpool’s stubbornness really could come back to bite them, especially as Man City will not quibble the price, and they might be about to miss out again, but this time to a direct rival.
