Premier League issue official statement after Manchester City vs Brighton incident

Gull-Mouth Action podcast: How Pascal Gross will help Brighton

All the reaction from Manchester City vs Brighton in the Premier League from the Etihad Stadium

Brighton were punished for one rash moment during the first half of their clash with Manchester City.

The Seagulls looked the more lively team in the opening exchanges and spurned three decent chances to take the lead. Had Pascal Gross, Ferdi Kadioglu and Georginio been more clinical with their opportunities, Albion could have had a comfortable advantage in an entertaining clash against Pep Guardiola’s team.

The key moment arrived just before the break as Jeremy Doku dribbled his way into the box. The City winger cut inside Brighton right back Jack Hinshelwood and away midfielder Diego Gomez was just too aggressive in the challenge and his knee caught Doku’s leg.

Referee Thomas Bramall was well placed but initially waved away the appeals. He was then advised by VAR to take a closer look at the pitchside monitor.

After review, Bramall correctly gave the penalty and City’s lethal Norwegian Erling Haaland sent Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen the wrong way from the spot.

Guardiola and Hurzeler clash

It caused a minor ruckus on the touchline between an animated Guardiola and Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, who was also keen to his point across to the vexed Spaniard.

The Premier League Match Centre cleared up the situation as they posted: “#MCIBHA – 38’ VAR OVERTURN After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Manchester City.

“Referee announcement: “After review, Brighton No.25 makes a careless tackle. My final decision is a penalty kick.”

Brighton are still in this match but have it all to do in the second half.
