Fulham secure rare derby win over 10-man Chelsea

Fulham defeated 10-man Chelsea 2-1 in the West London derby at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night thanks to Harry Wilson’s late strike.

The host got off to a fast start and almost had the lead inside the opening two minutes, but the Cottagers’ in-form man Wilson struck his effort straight into the gloves of Robert Sanchez.

Moments later, Bernd Leno was quick to react to Enzo Fernandez’s inswinger cross from a corner to deny the Argentine an olimpico goal.

At the other end, Wilson had his sights on goal again, but his long-range effort from 25 yards was calmly gathered by Sanchez.

The visitors almost got the opener in the 20th minute after Fernandez delivered yet another inswinger from a corner to the back post which evaded Leno, and Andrey Santos guided the ball against the woodwork, with Moises Caicedo’s rebound saved by Leno.

Four minutes later, disaster was spelt for Chelsea after Marc Cucurella was sent off by referee Peter Bankes for denying Wilson a clear goalscoring opportunity just outside the area.

Deep into stoppage time of halftime, the Cottagers thought they had taken the lead after Wilson found the back of the net, but after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside on Raul Jimenez in the build-up.

Two minutes after the restart, Pedro Neto broke through on goal on the left, but he skewed his effort horribly high and wide.

At the other end, Wilson’s deflected shot went just wide, and Diop headed over the resulting corner as the host searched for an opener.

In the 55th minute, Jimenez broke the deadlock, giving Fulham the lead after he headed home Berge’s pinpoint cross into the bottom corner beyond a stretching Sanchez.

Moments later, Kevin almost doubled the Cottagers’ advantage, but his long-range effort went wide of the near post.

Just past the hour mark, Liam Delap could’ve drawn the Blues level after he was played through on goal by a beautiful Cole Palmer dummy, but the Englishman’s chipped effort was denied by Leno.

Minutes later, Palmer had his sight on goal after he wriggled his way into the box, but his effort from a tight angle was kept out by the legs of Leno.

Chelsea drew level from the resulting corner after Neto’s delivery was flicked on the post by Antonee Robinson, and Delap was there to fire home the rebound.

In the 81st minute, Fulham retook the lead when Wilson’s strike from the edge of the area took a slight deflection off Reece James and nestled into the net.

Fulham have moved up to ninth in the Premier League standings, while Chelsea have dropped to seventh place, with both teams on 31 points.
