With injuries having sidelined several players, it was a much-changed City team with 20-year-old central defender Max Alleyne afforded a senior debut.
It was Pep Guardiola’s side who took a deserved first half lead, Erling Haaland converting a 40th minute penalty after Jeremy Doku had been brought down in the box.
The spot-kick also made it 150 City career goals for the remarkable Norwegian marksman.
However, the visitors hit back to draw level on the hour thanks to a low drive from Kaoru Mitoma.
And though City saw a Bernardo Silva effort strike the outside of the post with Haaland then twice going close to forcing a winner late on, ultimately it finished level.
