'I've heard tonight' - Jamie Redknapp drops Antoine Semenyo to Liverpool transfer hijack bombshell

Fulham 2-2 Liverpool: Match Review

Man City have reportedly agreed terms to sign Antoine Semenyo for £65 million from Bournemouth.

Jamie Redknapp has suggested that Antoine Semenyo’s transfer to Manchester City is not a ‘forgone conclusion’ - and Liverpool could still be in the mix.

Semenyo is thought to have played his final game for AFC Bournemouth in their 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night. The forward scored a dramatic 95th-minute winner to bring the curtain down on his Cherries career.

Liverpool held conversations with Bournemouth last month but Semenyo has appeared to be Etihad Stadium-bound. The Reds require a long-term successor for Mo Salah and some fans feel Semenyo would be the perfect solution.

But speaking on Sky Sports, former Anfield captain Redknapp - who started his career at Bournemouth - claimed there still might be a ‘little twist’. Redknapp said: "I think Liverpool could still be in the equation. I've got to be honest, if they did come in, I think why haven't they perhaps come in strongly? I'm surprised because if you look at that position with Mohamed Salah, what happens to him and how long he's going to be at the club for, we don't quite know. But if you've got a player of that quality and he shows you he's a matchwinner, he turns up in the big moments, why wouldn't you be in for him?

"So I'm not saying it's a Sky Sports News breaking news moment, but all I'm saying is I've heard tonight that it might not be the foregone conclusion that everybody's talking about and he's going to be having a medical at Man City. There might still be a little twist."

Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola fully expects Semenyo to depart in the coming days after his ‘fairytale ending’. Iraola told Match of the Day: “It’s a fairytale ending. Football sometimes gives you something back if you’re really committed. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached.

“He has been, if not the best, one of the best I have coached. He has improved every single season. He has scored 10 goals in half a season and he's not even a number nine. It is not just the numbers but a lot of things – the physicality, the balls in the air and the defensive things. He will be a big miss.

“To play the way he did, with the commitment to help in whatever way until the last second... I think football has been fair and given him a lovely moment. We needed this one, we have been very close in the last few games. Football can not every time go to the other side and today was the perfect moment, also for Antoine.”
