Why we can expect goals from Arsenal vs. Liverpool despite Reds’ form

Liverpool may be looking blunt in front of goal and Arsenal imperious at the back, but recent history suggests we can still expect goals from their meeting.

Only in five of the last 20 top-flight encounters between Liverpool and Arsenal have fewer than four goals been scored.

In fact, 79 goals have been scored in the last 20 league meetings, with Liverpool’s share being 50. The Reds have scored in each of the last nine league visits to Arsenal since a goalless draw in August 2015.

There has been only one goalless draw in the sides’ last 53 league encounters – at the Emirates in 2015.

Liverpool’s last victory at the Emirates came in the FA Cup third round two years ago, winning 2-0 with a Jakob Kiwior own goal on 80 minutes, followed by a Luis Diaz strike in injury time.

At Arsenal in the Premier League era, the Reds have won nine of 33 visits with 12 draws and 12 defeats.

They have lost three of their last 12 visits to Arsenal in league and cup – in July 2020 (2-1), 3-2 in October 2022 and 3-1 in February 2024.

Liverpool have not won any of their last three league visits to Arsenal and have conceded eight goals in those games.

Four of the last six league encounters, home and away, have ended in draws.

Arsenal have won three of the last 21 league clashes, losing 10.

Arsenal have been defeated in only one of their last 26 clashes (14 wins, 11 draws) against fellow ‘big-six’ clubs. That came at Anfield last August, ending a 22-game unbeaten run in such fixtures.

They, along with Sunderland, are the only teams in the top three divisions of English football not to have lost at home.

The Gunners have taken 28 points from a possible 30 at the Emirates this season, with only Man City in September avoiding defeat at the ground in the top-flight.

Liverpool are the only team to prevent Arsenal from scoring in any of their 29 games this season in all competitions. They have scored in each of the last 25.

Liverpool’s win over Arsenal in August was the Reds’ first victory in their last seven league encounters, since the 2-0 win at the Emirates in March 2022.

Liverpool have failed to score in only one of their last 31 away league games – at Man City back in November.

Dominik Szoboszlai, when scoring against Arsenal in August, became the 17th different Liverpool player to score a direct free-kick in the Premier League era.
