Key Points
Luka Doncic has been nothing short of a superstar throughout his eight-year NBA career. He is a perennial MVP candidate and continues to dazzle with spectacular performances on a daily basis.
And despite his incredible success, now with the Los Angeles Lakers, Doncic seems convinced there is always room for improvement. The Lakers, playing the San Antonio Spurs for the third time this season on Wednesday night, scored the second fewest amount of points in a game this season, 91. They scored just 88 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, Dec. 20.
On Wednesday night, the Lakers fell to the Spurs 107-91, and now sit at 23-12 on the season. They were without the services of LeBron James in this one, as “King James” sat out in order to rehab his ongoing bout with sciatica as well as a nagging foot injury.
Luka Doncic Reveals Reason For Lakers Struggles Against Spurs
Doncic on the other hand, did everything possible, especially on the offensive end, to try and will his team to victory. Doncic finished with 38 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists to go along with three steals and two made 3-pointers in 38 minutes played.
Doncic’s Herculean performance wasn’t enough though, as he was one of only three players to score in double digits for the Lakers in this one. Following the game, Doncic clearly placed the blame for the team’s blowout loss to the Spurs on Wednesday night.
“I think I still shoulda done way better than this,” Doncic said.
Doncic expressed his disappointment in his own performance when speaking to reporters following the game. He highlighted the amount of turnovers he had (seven), seemingly pointing to his own play as the reason for the team’s loss.
Jake LaRavia and Jaxson Hayes were the only other players to score in double digits. LaRavia finished with 16 points and Hayes finished with 10 points. Although Doncic is attempting to be a good teammate, while shouldering some amount of the blame for the Lakers’ loss on Wednesday night, Doncic played a really solid all-around game against the Spurs. He tallied his fourth triple-double of the season in the process.
As for Doncic’s teammates injuries, there is no official timetable for James to return, however he will presumably suit up for the Lakers next game. Austin Reaves remains out with a calf injury, as his absence continues to put more pressure on the Lakers bench and supporting cast to take on more of the scoring responsibilities.
The Lakers previous three-game winning-streak has officially been snapped, and they will look to start a new streak on Friday when they take on Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks inside crypto.com Arena at 10:30 p.m. EDT.
