The January transfer window has brought its fair share of disappointment to Anfield, and the latest blow comes in the form of Antoine Semenyo’s seemingly inevitable move to Manchester City. Despite months of speculation linking the Bournemouth star with a switch to Merseyside, all signs now point toward the Ghanaian international becoming a Citizens player before the week is out.
Manchester City have successfully triggered Semenyo’s £65 million release clause, with the 26-year-old undergoing his medical on Thursday, January 8. The deal is now described as being at the “formalities” stage, with all documents exchanged between the clubs and personal terms agreed. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola essentially confirmed the transfer following Wednesday night’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Tottenham, where Semenyo scored a stunning 95th-minute winner in what proved to be his farewell appearance.
However, former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes there could be a twist in the tail. Speaking on Sky Sports on Wednesday evening, Redknapp said that Liverpool could make a late hijack:
“Everyone thinks it’s a foregone conclusion, I’m not so sure. I’ve heard there might be a little bit of a twist still… “I think Liverpool could still be in the equation… Why they haven’t come in as strongly, I’m surprised because you look at that position with Mo Salah, how long he’s going to be at the club for, we don’t know.”
“But if you’ve got a player of that quality, he’s a match-winner, turns up in the big moments, why wouldn’t you be in for him?! So I’m not saying it’s a Sky Sports breaking news moment, but all I’m saying is I’ve heard tonight it might not be the foregone conclusion everyone’s talking about and that he’s going to be having a medical at Man City. There might still be a little twist. I hope so!”
The Ghana international has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists in 21 Premier League appearances.
